National Aviary Veterinary Hospital:
A Leader in Bird Health

Photo: surgery on a dove With 800 birds representing more than 200 species on site, the National Aviary’s Veterinary Hospital is a busy place. Managing the health needs of species ranging from carnivorous raptors to the smallest of song birds requires specialized knowledge and skills. Using ground-breaking medical techniques, Dr. Pilar Fish, Director of Veterinary Medicine, and her staff provide advanced medical care to the National Aviary’s collection and work to raise awareness of bird health issues. And because the medical needs of such a diverse bird collection are always changing, the Aviary’s hospital staff continues to develop and share new ways to treat birds in order to benefit other zoo birds and wildlife.
