Photo: Hispaniolan Parror; photo by Eladio FernandezThe Hispaniolan Parrot (Amazona ventralis), is endemic only to the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, is considered vulnerable to extinction, and is under serious threat by the pet trade.

In 2006, the Sociedad Ornitológica de la Hispaniola (SOH), with support from the National Aviary, initiated an innovative campaign to help conserve remaining populations of the Hispaniolan Parrot in the Sierra de Bahoruco, and we have now expanded this campaign to Haiti with partner organization Société Audubon Haiti (SAH).

Our goal is to advance protection of this threatened species through research and community education by building capacity of individuals, institution building, and the promotion of multi-national cooperation among Dominican, Haitian, and North American conservation organizations. The importance of conservation campaigns that are coordinated between neighboring Haiti and the Dominican Republic can not be underestimated. Our efforts to build a cohesive and comprehensive campaign for the conservation of this threatened parrot can serve as a model for similar efforts across the island at a variety of scales.
