Photo: Golden Eagle #41; photo by Keith HodanEagle #41, a male juvenile eastern golden eagle, was accidentally captured by a mammal trapper near Scherr, West Virginia, and turned over to National Aviary and Carnegie Museum of Natural History biologists on 05 January 2007. Because he had been captured in a leg hold trap, he sustained extensive wounds on his left leg and was starving and severely dehydrated.

When we received him he weighed about 3300 g. His injuries and physical condition were critical, and he required 11 weeks of rehabilitation before he could be released into the wild. He was fitted with a telemetry device and released on Thursday, 22 March 2007; by that time he had gained weight and he was about 4000 g.
